Federal flood-control facilities require ongoing vegetation management to maintain infrastructure, support operational access, and control undesirable plant growth. These projects often involve complex environmental requirements, particularly where management areas overlap wetlands, sensitive habitats, or other regulated resources.
In 2026, Adirondack Research was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New England District, to perform chemical vegetation control at Birch Hill Dam in Royalston, Massachusetts. The project involved targeted herbicide applications across designated management areas, including locations near the facility entrance, upstream areas, and areas along River Road.
A significant component of the project was environmental permitting and regulatory coordination. Portions of the property were associated with mapped Priority Habitat, requiring coordination with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program and local conservation authorities. Adirondack Research prepared supporting environmental documentation, treatment-area maps, and permit materials to address applicable restrictions before completing field operations.
Field treatments were conducted during August 2026. Crews implemented herbicide applications in approved management areas while coordinating access, application logistics, and environmental requirements with USACE personnel. The main entrance treatment area required additional regulatory coordination and was completed after the outstanding approvals were addressed.
Accurate treatment documentation was central to project implementation. Adirondack Research maintained chemical utilization reports identifying treatment activities and herbicide use, providing federal land managers with records to support contract administration, regulatory compliance, and future maintenance planning.
Following treatment, Adirondack Research coordinated with USACE to assess vegetation control effectiveness. The agency’s representative confirmed satisfactory treatment results and authorized final invoicing.
By integrating professional herbicide application, environmental permitting, field operations, and detailed reporting, the Birch Hill Dam project demonstrates Adirondack Research’s ability to deliver vegetation management services at environmentally sensitive federal facilities.
